A new dance programme aimed at getting older people more active has started in Andover and nearby towns and villages too.

Around 50 older and less active people salsa’d down to Andover Leisure Centre recently to take part in the launch of the Move More with Zumba® Fitness programme, being run by Valley Leisure.

The free 30-minute dance sessions saw the community explore a range of dance styles from Spanish flamenco to Irish jigs to hip hop.

Test Valley Mayor, Iris Anderson and her consort, John Cockaday, both joined in the group activity.

The Mayor said: “This was a great event for socialising and for gentle exercise. It was great fun and there was laughter all round the room. It is also very reasonably priced.”

Zumba® Education Specialist, Hender Correndo Escalante, who conducted the sessions with fellow Zumba® specialist, Caroline Parsons, said: “Zumba Gold® is an amazing way to enjoy exercise by laughing, having fun, smiling and just moving around. It’s really a great way to stay active.”

The Move More with Zumba® Fitness programme is an ideal activity for older people and for those just beginning their journey to a fit and healthy lifestyle.

The new Zumba® classes have been organised after Valley Leisure, the company who run Andover Leisure Centre and Charlton Lakeside. It was awarded money from a special national fund, ‘Make your Move’ via Sport England to run activity classes for 440 inactive and older people in venues across the community and at leisure centres in Test Valley.

Regular classes are now being held at the Andover Leisure Centre on Mondays at 2pm and Thursdays at 1.15pm.

They are also being held on Tuesdays from 6pm to 6.30pm at Test Valley School in Stockbridge, on Wednesdays from 1pm to 1.30pm at the St Paul’s Church Centre on Smannell Road in Andover and at Amport Village Hall on Fridays from 1.30pm to 2pm.
