Valley Leisure Ltd held their first ‘Riverside Get-together’ on Thursday 5th October at Riverside Bowl, situated above Wilko’s on Bridge Street in Andover which attracted over 25 people.
Set up in partnership with the Older People’s Mental Health Team based at Andover War Memorial Hospital and Age UK Mid Hampshire, the Riverside Get-together is a free and informal session enabling the older generation of Andover to get together, enjoy a chat with friends old and new, play board games, card games, snooker, pool or go ten-pin bowling.
Those attending had a great time enjoying both games of Pontoon with some braving the ten-pin bowling lanes to have a rather raucous game of bowling.
One gentleman, in his eighties, commented how nice it was to see older people having fun and enjoying themselves.
Jane Aldridge, Enablement Project Coordinator for Age UK Mid Hampshire said;
“The Riverside Get-together provides a great opportunity for men and women over 55 to socialise with other people and be active. Age UK Mid Hampshire regularly supports people who are lonely and isolated and we know how groups like this enable people to stay connected with their community.”
Liz Murray, Community Health Development Manager for Valley Leisure Ltd said
“Valley Leisure’s core mission is to enable people to move more and feel better. The creation of the Riverside Get-together by working with both the health and voluntary sector has enabled us to deliver something that truly meets the needs of older people locally benefitting mental, physical and social health and wellbeing.”
“By working in partnership, we are better able to understand the needs of local older people who are looking for more informal but supportive places to get together, have a chat and a laugh which in turn helps to combat loneliness and isolation.”
“I hope that many more older people join us each and every week.”
The Riverside Get-together takes place every Thursday during school term time from 11.00am to 1.00pm. Free tea and coffee is available. No booking is required.
