Keeping Carers Healthy: Valley Leisure’s Work with PRTC

Jul 9, 2024 | Blog

In early 2024, we were delighted to be asked to support Andover-based charity, the Princess Royal Trust for Carers (PRTC). With generous funding from SGN (Scotia Gas Network), PRTC has established monthly Home and Well Hubs in 10 locations throughout Hampshire. These hubs are dedicated to providing vital information, support, and advice to carers and those they care for, through a network of local support organizations including PRTC.

Each Home and Well Hub serves as a comprehensive resource centre, offering carers access to essential support services. Our role at these hubs is to promote the health and well-being of carers through a 30-minute seated exercise taster session at each location throughout 2024. These sessions are led by Liz, Valley Leisure’s Partnerships Development Manager and specialist exercise instructor.

The 30-minute sessions include a variety of activities designed to improve mobility and strength:

  • Joint Mobilization: Gentle movements to enhance flexibility and reduce stiffness.
  • Muscle Strengthening: Exercises to build and maintain muscle strength.
  • Relaxation Stretching: Techniques to promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Each participant receives a goodie bag containing useful tools to continue their fitness journey at home. These include:

  • A chair-based exercise booklet
  • A resistance band for strength exercises
  • A pen
  • Information about the I Can Therapy Centre

Additionally, Liz provides information on locally available ‘Steady and Strong’ falls prevention classes, helping to ensure the long-term health and safety of participants.

Liz has already visited several locations, including Andover, New Milton, Brockenhurst, and Eastleigh. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Basingstoke, Fareham, Gosport, Winchester, and Aldershot. By traveling across the county, we have the opportunity to spread positive active aging messages and support the Live Longer Better initiative. This initiative aligns with the county-wide falls prevention service coordinated by Hampshire County Council.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of carers and those they care for.
