When was the last time you checked in on your mobility?
Most of us wouldn’t dream of skipping our annual car MOT, yet many people go years without assessing one of the most important assets they have – their own physical health. This August, local charity Valley Leisure is encouraging residents in Abbotts Ann to do just that by booking a Mobility MOT through its I Can Move More service.
What Is a Mobility MOT?
A Mobility MOT is a simple, 30-minute assessment designed to provide a snapshot of your current physical function. By looking at key areas such as mobility, balance, strength and stamina, it can help identify opportunities to maintain independence, confidence and quality of life as we age.
During the assessment, participants complete a series of straightforward functional fitness tests, including:
- Sit-to-stand
- Sit-and-reach
- Grip strength
- Balance tests
- A two-minute march
Together, these assessments provide valuable insight into how well your body is functioning and can highlight areas where small changes may make a big difference to your long-term health and wellbeing.
Why Mobility Matters
Changes in strength, flexibility and balance often happen gradually. As a result, many people don’t notice a decline until everyday activities start becoming more difficult.
According to Liz Murray, Head of Active Ageing at Valley Leisure:
“We often wait until something becomes difficult before we think about our mobility, but many changes in strength, balance and flexibility happen gradually over time. The Mobility MOT is a simple and positive way for people to understand how their body is functioning today and identify opportunities to stay strong, supple and stable, to maintain independence and confidence in the future.”
By understanding your current physical capabilities, you can take proactive steps to stay active, reduce your risk of falls and maintain your independence for longer.
Who Can Benefit?
The Mobility MOT is particularly beneficial for adults aged 50 and over, although anyone interested in understanding their physical health can benefit from the assessment. Adapted Mobility MOTs are also available for wheelchair users, ensuring the service is accessible to as many people as possible.
Whether you’re already active, returning to exercise, or simply curious about how your mobility compares to healthy ageing benchmarks, the assessment offers a useful starting point.
